Nano Science research expands to Utica - 10/10/13

The nano scale industry is expanding in New York where its next stop will be Marcy, at SUNYIT.
On Thursday Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a $1.5 billion investment that will create up to 1,000 jobs in the Utica area. The public/private partnership will mean six companies will invest in Marcy, and the college, to grow the Mohawk Valley into the "next major hub of Nano Tech research".
The public-private partnership will be headed by the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.
Cuomo pointed to successes of nano technology in the Capital Region saying the Mohawk Valley will be the next area of the state to benefit.
"If you think the Mohawk Valley was great, you ain't seen nothing yet," Cuomo said a press conference Thursday. "This reminds me so much of the growth in the Capital Region."
At the announcement Thursday Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, D- Utica, said the best days are ahead of the region.
"We are positioning this community for major economic growth," Brindisi said.
Officials in the Utica area have been trying to lure a semi-conductor, chip fab plant and/or nano research lab dating back to the mid 1990's. Land around the SUNYIT campus, in Marcy, has been considered
"shovel ready" for nearly a decade.
The computer chip packaging consortium will work inside a complex now under construction on the SUNYIT campus, which is due to open in late 2014, said a statement issued by the governor's office.
