Weather Alert

Low pressure developing off the Southeast coast will quickly move northeast tracking south of New England through Wednesday night as colder air arrives to produce a moderate to heavy snow storm for much of the region.  Snow will develop quickly Wednesday morning and fall heavily at times through the afternoon and evening before tapering off and ending before daybreak on Thursday.  Expect difficult travel conditions with snow packed roads and low visibility through the duration of this storm.  Click Here for the CBS6 Weather Forecast Page

First Impressions of Travers Stakes - 08/21/13

Verrazano is the morning line favorite for Saturday's 144th running of the Travers Stakes and deservedly so. His only blemish on the record is the Kentucky Derby, which was the same distance as the Travers and was run with a hot pace. The pace setup is my main concern with Verrazano. Can he handle the fractions up from with the likes of Palace Malice and Moreno? Those two ran respectable fractions under :24 for each quarter mile in the Jim Dandy last time out.

The 8 post for Palace Malice is slightly concerning just because he will have to run out of the gate and get around those to his inside as he cuts in towards the rail before the first turn. If that takes too much energy from him, he could be in trouble. Orb has been training well since an extended stay at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, but the more than two months on the bench is at least something to consider. Will Take Charge is interesting. He ran a decent second at long odds in the Jim Dandy last time out and looks to be rounding into form after competing in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Golden Soul laid an egg in the Haskell at Monmouth last month. It makes one wonder if he needs an off-track, like he had in the Derby, to run his best race. War Dancer is a turf horse trying dirt for the second time. His only start on the dirt was the worst race of his career.

1. Romansh 12-1

2. Orb 4-1

3. Verrazano 2-1

4. Golden Soul 20-1

5. Will Take Charge 10-1

6. Moreno 12-1

7. War Dancer 15-1

8. Palace Malice 5-2

9. Transparent 10-1
