Backpack Heroes

During the month of September, CBS 6 and Fidelis Care invite the community to help combat hunger in our community by being “Backpack Heroes.”

Although free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs provide significant nutritional benefits to students during the school day, many disadvantaged children do not receive sufficient food when school is not in session. The Regional Food Bank’s Backpack Program helps alleviate child hunger by discreetly providing hungry children with backpacks full of nutritious and easy-to-prepare food on Friday afternoons so they have food to eat throughout the weekend.

Each Friday, over 3,500 students receive bags of food to help them eat throughout the weekend. During the 2015-16 school year, over 100,000 bags were distributed, delivering over 610,000 meals directly into the hands of needy students. The Backpack Program serves 133 schools in 69 school districts across 20 counties.

To sponsor a child for the school year costs only $183, which breaks down to just $6.10 week. Make your donation today!
