Positively Upstate: Walk like MADD
This September several groups will be walking through the Saratoga Spa State Park in remembrance of drunk driving victims. The first ‘Walk Like MADD’ event is set to take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on September 16th. It’s the first time this event, a signature walk of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, has ever been held in the Capital Region. The face of this year’s walk is Kari Liedel, a 14-year-old from Milton killed by a drunk driver in 2012.
“She was 14. She wasn’t even in the car. She was just walking down the road.” Says Sarah Liedel, Kari’s mother. “An innocent person doing nothing. That’s usually who the victim is.”
Although Liedel works locally in drunk driving prevention, she says this will be her first Walk Like MADD event – a group she says helped her own exponentially following her daughter’s accident.
“Everybody needs to be aware of this issue, the problem. And how to stop it.”
All donations towards MADD go towards prevention and victim services. If you can’t attend the walk but still want to be involved you have the option of being a ‘virtual walker’ or donating towards a team or individual walker.
