Positively Upstate: Freihofer's Run For Women

.

This Saturday marks the 40th running of the Freihofer’s Run For Women in Albany. CBS6 is a proud sponsor of the event which welcomes more than 4,000 runners each year. One of them is 23-year-old Brianna Phillips. It’s her first time running the race but her memories of it go back to when she was a little girl and her mother ran.

“I would be in the stroller watching her and cheering her on.” Brianna remembers with a smile. “A few months later she was diagnosed with cancer. A melanoma. So, she never raced again.”

Brianna’s mother survived and will cross that finish line again this weekend, only this time with her daughter beside her. For Brianna, running this 5k is a different personal journey focusing on getting fit; physically and mentally.

“I always was an athlete in high school and suffered from mental illness when I went to college. That stunted working out for me and running.” She says.

When Brianna met co-director of the Freihofer’s Run for Women, Kristen Hislop, she says her life changed. She decided to get back into working out and started training for the 5k. In doing that, she found a community of support.

“One things that people don’t realize when you start running is when you run with a group, you share.” Kristen Hislop explains. “You get to know people very well.”

Brianna says her running pace is a bit faster than her mother’s, but Saturday she still plans to run the whole race by her side.

“I said, any other day I can go out and run a time I’d like to run. But this moment is about you and I. It’s about not being the 5-year-old in the stroller but being the 23-year-old now, holding her hand and finishing. And that’s what it means to me.”
