State Education Commissioner visits Hackett Middle School
ALBANY--As students in the Albany city school district headed back to school today, CBS 6 caught up with state education commissioner MaryEllen Elia.
She joined students on the first day at Hackett Middle School where we talked about failing schools in Albany, the improvements she's seen and what's next for those schools.
Hackett was on the list, they made some changes, they put in programs that were supportive and they got buy in from the teachers and I think it's made a huge difference and really helped them to move off of the list. But being off the list doesn't mean you can step back and not continue this strong work that's been done," said Elia.
Commissioner Elia also met with students outside of the school, helped with backpack checks and joined in on the morning announcements.
