GLENVILLE -- The Glenville Police Department is currently investigating what appears to be an alleged scam by companies claiming to be professional driveway sealers.

Police say these individuals are targeting the elderly population. The scam consists of an individual soliciting a homeowner into having their driveway sealed or "re-surfaced".

They may tell the homeowner that they have "extra" material from a previous job and will complete the job at a reduced fee to get rid of the excess material.

They will con the homeowner into believing that they need the work done.

Police say they've have investigated incidents in the past where some of these individuals try to enter the homes and burglaries occur.

Police say is in the best interest of the public to keep the following tips in mind:

1. If a company or individual approaches you "soliciting" to complete a job, ask to see their solicitor's permit issued by the Town.
2. If you believe you actually need work done on your driveway, then ask for references and get a second estimate from a reputable company before deciding.
3. Contact the Attorney Generals office or Better Business Bureau to see if this company has reported frauds in the past.

They also say if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Glenville Police ask that if you have been the victim of a scam or someone has attempted to scam you, then please call them at 384-3444.
