A Bottom Line Alert from the New York Department of State, which is warning of a recent scam involving callers pretending to be Department of State staffers.
In most cases, the scammers are calling people at their home or business under the guise of an alleged outstanding case against them.
The Department of State said it does not communicate by phone or electronic means without first sending written confirmation of possible allegations and providing all the proper contacts. Officials warn to be suspicious of any phone calls or e-mails asking for detailed personal or financial information, especially when they require some form of immediate payment.
