The Bottom Line: Military & Veteran Scams

Updated: Friday, October 11 2013, 06:00 PM EDT
ALBANY -- A Bottom Line Alert from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, for our military service members and veterans.

The A.G. says their lifestyle and line of work make them more susceptible to fraud, and now more attractive to scammers.

For example, there's the phone scam CBS 6's Dori Marlin has warned about before, in which the caller pretends to be the VA phishing for veterans' personal information.

There's also financial fraud, in which banks and mortgage lenders may try to take advantage of a current member's active military service.

The simple solution from Schneiderman is for members and veterans to take their time with any purchase or investment decision, resist any high-pressure tactics, and know all the policies.
