The Bottom Line: Police & Sheriff Tips Report

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- A Bottom Line Alert about a brand new phone scam making the rounds.
The warning comes from Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato, who tells CBS 6's Dori Marlin he's just hearing about it this week, but is trying to get ahead of it.
He says a business owner in Fonda got a call from someone using the Sheriff's Office name, trying to collect money for ads to supposedly appear in the "Police & Sheriff Tips Report."
The caller claimed it's a publication for national crime tips, but the money collected would be used for the local agency.
The Sheriff says, you would agree to buy an ad, get a package delivered to you via FedEx or UPS, and then have to write a check for $150.
You would be asked to send the check to an address in Simi Valley, California. But Sheriff Amato tells Dori that after checking with police in Simi Valley, he discovered the address is just an empty storefront.
If you get one of these calls, Sheriff Amato says to hang up, and make sure not to send any money.
