The Bottom Line: Spam Text Settlement

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:17 PM EDT
A settlement to stop spam text messages, and now New York's Attorney General is warning New Yorkers how to avoid other texting scams.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that Game Theory LLC will pay $500,000 after the company was found to be sending the spam texts and tricking consumers into signing up for text services.  One example: a text that told recipients that they had a secret crush, and then unknowingly charged them $9.99 per month to find out who it was and receive dating tips.
To avoid a similar scam, the AG said that you should never respond to unsolicited text messages, even if it tells you to "reply STOP to avoid charges."  Never click on any links included in the text.  Also, call your cell phone provider and ask them to block any third party charges.
Finally, make sure to spread that advice to other family members, including children. The Bottom Line: Spam Text Settlement
