Take a Break: Time to Dance

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 09:18 PM EDT
For one day recently at Veeder Elementary School in Colonie, things like basketball and kickball play second fiddle to games like kickball and basketball.

Instead, students enjoyed a community dance, a traditional type of dance that's been done all over the world for centuries.

The men running the show at Veeder were Peter Davis, Paul Rosenberg and George Wilson.

Or Peter, Paul and George for short.

Their mission is to take kids back in time to when leisure activities weren't something you enjoyed alone.

"We're old enough to remember kids on the playground, singing games and traditions like that," says Davis,  "You dont see it very much anymore."

They blame pop culture and electronics for the breakdown of community events, like dances.  Capital Region phys ed instructors say p-e class is a great place to rebuild them.

Rian Richardson, Veeder PE teacher says, "it's great teamwork, great for cooperation.  The students have to work together to learn the dances.  They're having a lot of fun with it."

Peter, Paul and George are hopeful their silly songs and simple steps will bring other kids out of hiding and open their eyes to a new kind of fun. that's actually very old.
