You Paid For It: Prison Renovations

When we told you earlier this year about $2.79 million of rehab work being done at the Mount McGregor Correctional Facility, even though the State is about to shut it down, it turns out that was just the tip of the iceberg. It turns out the same thing has happened at other state prisons in the recent past. Case in point, Oneida Correctional Facility, a victim of budget cuts a few years back..
Oneida Correctional was closed in 2011, and just like Mount McGregor, it underwent a pricey rehab before the shutdown. Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney represents part of Central New York, and says a private company would never do business that way.
In checking OGS records, we found $7.7 million in renovation work done before the closure. State officials did not want to comment for our story.
