Ask the Vets: Is the cure for fleas worse than the problem?

BALLSTON SPA -- You try to be a responsible pet owner, and treat your pets to keep the fleas and ticks away.
But did you know that some popular products sold for use on dogs can be deadly to your cats?
Christine Dwyer wrote us about some over the counter products containing a powerful pesticide.
Within hours of using it as directed on her dog. One of her cats began having seizures and had to be rushed to the vet.
She later called the manufacture and says she couldn't get any sensible answers, so we asked the vets...
Dr. Danica Salamun of the Ballston Spa Vet Clinic says ""these products are available in pet stores, grocery stores and they're very inexpensive. unfortunately they have a product called permethrin in there and that permethrin is something that is toxic to many cats."
And if theyre not treated in time, it can even be fatal.
There are other products, primarily available through vets, that do not contain permethrin.
They're also available on line, but there you run the risk of buying a counterfeit.
