Mayor: Cop killer lay in wait for police to arrive

Updated: Sunday, July 13 2014, 07:32 PM EDT
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say a man who fatally shot a rookie Jersey City officer responding to an armed robbery call never tried to rob the drugstore and instead lay in wait for police to arrive.

Mayor Steven Fulop identified the gunman as 27-year-old Lawrence Campbell of Jersey City. The mayor says Campbell told a witness before he shot 23-year-old officer Melvin Santiago to watch the news because he was "going to be famous."

Santiago was shot in the head as he exited his police vehicle at a Walgreens at about 4.a.m. Sunday. Campbell was killed by other officers.

Fulop says Campbell had asked for directions to the greeting card aisle. He was carrying a knife and snatched a gun away from the armed security guard there.

Campbell was wanted by police for a prior homicide.
