SCHENECTADY -- Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy they say menaced two police officers with an imitation firearm.
The boy, who is not being identified because of his age, was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors. Officials say the suspect was standing on the 700 block of Craig Street on Sunday night just before 11 p.m. with what appeared to be a handgun. When cops approached, the boy turned towards their car and pointed the weapon at the patrol car.
Police say the boy took off into a house on Craig Street, but cops were able to catch him when he tried to slip out another exit. Officers on the scene recovered an air gun they say is an exact replica of a Smith and Wesson M&P 45.
According to officials, the replica was so realistic looking that it was only after officers attempted to render it safe that they realized it was not a real gun.
