5th grade teacher accused of sexual relationship with former student
WILTON, NY (WRGB) A fifth grade teacher is accused of having sexual contact with a former student.
The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office says it arrested 48-year-old Elizabeth Barthelmas, charging her with Rape in the First Degree, Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree.
The Sheriff's Office says the child was younger than 13 at the time and was a former student of Barthelmas. Investigators say the contact happened between 2007 and 2008 at Barthelmas' home
Barthelmas is a teacher at the Dorothy Nolan Elementary school, within the Saratoga Springs City School District.
The Sheriff's Office says it informed the school administration and the school district was fully cooperative with the investigation.
Barthelmas was arraigned Wednesday in the Wilton Town Court and held at the county jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. She pled not guilty.
The district, in a release, says it learned of the issue on June 13. Barthelmas was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to the district.
District officials say that while she is on leave, she is not permitted on the school grounds.
In a release the district said, "The welfare of our students is our number one priority. The District takes these charges very seriously and is fully cooperating with the investigation."
