Albany man charged in Rensselaer under Leandra's Law
RENSSELAER -- An Albany man is behind bars Sunday after police say he drove under the influence, with children in the vehicle.
Rensselaer police responded at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday to a call for a possible intoxicated driver. Locating the vehicle at Broadway and Third, they conducted a traffic stop.
On investigation, officers found James A. Jones Jr., 46, of Albany, driving under the influence of alcohol. They conducted field sobriety tests, which Jones failed. He refused to take a pre-screening test for alcohol.
Police said Jones was operating the vehicle with two children, ages 11 months and 10 years, in the vehicle. They also found his license had been revoked for previous DWI convictions.
Jones was charged under Leandra's Law, driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle less than 15 years of age. Charges include DWI 1192-3, a class E Felony; Endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor; Refusal to take breath test, a Violation; and Aggravated Unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle class E Felony.
Jones was arraigned in Rensselaer City Court and remanded to Rensselaer County Jail on $7,500 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
