Backpack Heroes: Providing nutritious meals for children
Wednesday night, a total of $9,924 dollars was raised, smashing last year's total of $7,000
LATHAM, NY (WRGB)--Each September, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY kicks into overdrive to make sure that 5,500 schoolkids all the way from Canada to New Jersey have nutritious meals to take home on weekends.
With the help of Fidelis Care and local school districts, Executive Director Mark Quandt is planning a menu for thousands.
"So these are some of the items that will go in the backpack program. Our mac and cheese is a big thing, elbow or spaghetti, stuffing mix," he said.
Every Friday during the school year the kids head home for the weekend with 11 pounds of food stuffed in their backpacks.
Last years Backpack Heroes campaign raised $47,000, which added the Backpack Program to 3 additional schools in Troy and expanded the program in another school.
