Community responds to mayor's arrest on child porn charges

Stillwater mayor Ricky Nelson is behind bars tonight on child pornography charges.

"It's disgusting. How can you live with yourself to be honest?" said Michelle Mitchell.

Stillwater residents like Mitchell are reacting to child pornography charges Thursday against their Mayor, 62 year old Ricky Nelson.

"I mean it's surprising because well, it happens all the time to people, but the mayor of a small town like this? It is different, it is strange,” said Getti Weismore.

Nelson was arrested Thursday morning at his home. New York State Police say they executed a search warrant there after being alerted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about possible downloading of child pornography from an IP address found at that address. Police say that's when they found a lap top that contained images. They say there's no evidence the children depicted are local.

"I think this case really stresses the point that a person's economic status, employment status, or their status in the community has nothing to do with whether or not an individual is capable of committing these types of crimes,” said State Police Captain Richard O'Brien.

In his biography on the village website, it says Nelson is a deacon at Stillwater United Church, and was a referee for 30 years for women's sports at the high school and college levels.

Nelson is now being held at the Saratoga County Jail.

As a mother, Mitchell says if Nelson is found guilty, she wants him to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

"I just hope that he gets the punishment he deserves and that, because he's the Mayor, he doesn't get let off easy for it."

Police say the investigation is continuing and more charges may be coming. If anyone feels their child may be a victim, you're asked to contact State Police.
