Crews responding to fire on First Street in Rensselaer
RENSSELAER -- Three apartment buildings were destroyed in a late night fire on the 1400 block on First Street in Rensselaer.
The call came in around 10:05pm Tuesday.
Fire officials say about 6 departments and more than 100 firefighters were on scene.
When they arrived the fire was in the attic or roof of one apartment buildings. Fire officials said it was very advanced and difficult to fight, and it spread quickly. It took them a while to get the flames under control. They had to bring in water from surrounding streets.
Five apartment units were destroyed - 1491, 1493, 1495, 1497, 1499.
All residents got out safely. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the families. We're told none of the buildings can be re-entered.
Two firefighters were treated for injuries on scene.
Jay Corcoran, the Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Rensselaer said it's a very close-knit neighborhood, he believes neighbors worked together to make sure everyone was out safely, but he said it was a "close call".
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
