Eight charged with welfare fraud

ALBANY COUNTY -- Albany County Sheriff Craig D. Apple, Sr. reports the arrests of eight individuals on charges of welfare fraud.

Sheriff's investigators ans investigators from the Albany County Department of Social Services have been conducting investigations to combat welfare fraud in Albany County. Many people would fill out benefit applications with false information in order to obtain benefits to which they were not entitled.

Recently, Sheriff's investigators arrested and charged eight people on charges of welfare fraud committed in Albany County. The total amount allegedly defrauded by these suspects was $79,922.74. Charged are:

Feride Ercan, 45, of Glenmont, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and seven counts of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Ercan fraudulently stole $13,304.12.

Tameka L. Morrison, 37, of Albany, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Morrison fraudulently stole $5,806.00.

Carmica E. Sanders, 36, of Troy, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Sanders fraudulently stole $10,418.00.

Danielette H. Booker, 44, of Albany, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Booker fraudulently stole $9,324.00.

Janet M. Shea, 44, of Albany, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Shea fraudulently stole $21,228.00.

Justine E. Rios, 24, of Albany, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Riosfraudulently stole $6,627.44.

Jessica J. Selby, 35, of Watervliet, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony). Selby fraudulently stole $3,963.18.

Nina M. Porfirio, 38, of Albany, was charged with one count of Grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), one count of Welfare fraud in the third degree (a class D felony) and one count of Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree (a class E felony). Porfirio fraudulently stole $9,252.00.

All eight were arraigned in the City of Albany Criminal Court and released pending further court appearances.
