Local man faces charge after Airbnb rental goes wrong
"Very scared, it's not a picture I'll forget."
Karen Robinson says she, her husband, her son and their dog were visiting the area from Michigan for her granddaughter's birthday - when a misunderstanding at this Airbnb they rented, heated up.
"I hear yelling," Robinson told CBS6. "Yelling about the dog, and 'you all have to be out tomorrow, this is it I can't do this...'"
Robinson says they'd only been there a couple of hours when the man renting them the space said he was getting his gun.
"Right here next to him as he's swinging his gun back and forth is my granddaughter's head," Robinson said.
The gun ended up being a BB gun. Robinson says the man put it down and went back next door to his home. The sheriff's department responded and made an arrest. We went and met the man, but he declined to speak to us on the record.
"I get if there was something you were unhappy about," Robinson said. "There's a better way to handle that."
We reached out to Airbnb who sent us a statement saying in part, "We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior and upon learning of this incident, the host was permanently banned from our community and our guests were fully supported."
The Robinsons say they just hope no one else goes through this with the home rental site.
"Our biggest goal is just making sure that other people in public are not subject to this," Robinson said.
"It could have went very bad, very quickly."
Airbnb also tells us if anything bad come up on the man's initial background check, he would not have been approved. They say this host had an undisclosed BB gun, which is against policy. The company has taken care of reimbursed the guests.
This is the company's full statement:
"There have been over 200 million guest arrivals in Airbnb listings and negative incidents are extremely rare, but when they do happen, our global Trust and Safety team is on call 24/7 to help. We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior and upon learning of this incident, the host was permanently banned from our community and our guests were fully supported. We have also reached out to local law enforcement to assist them with their investigation. The safety of the Airbnb community is the most important thing we work on every day."
