Man rescued after using submerged kayak to stay afloat in Hudson


The Saugerties Police Department says a 20-year-old man is safe is after being in the water for more than an hour using his kayak to stay afloat.

On Saturday, August 12, Ulster County 911 received a call for a missing kayaker from the Glasco Mini Park. Police say Tyler Brinkhuis of Glasco, went kayaking at approximately 4:30 PM and was supposed to have returned by 6:30 PM.

Officers responded to the Glasco Mini and confirmed that Brinkhuis had not returned. The Glasco fire department and the Ulster Hose Fire Department were dispatched with their marine units. After approximately a half hour search, the Glasco Fire Department located Brinkhuis in the water. Brinkhuis explained that the river sudden became rough and his kayak capsized.

Brinkhuis was returned to shore and was evaluated and released by Diaz ambulance. The Saugerties Police department was assisted by the Glasco Fire Department, the Ulster Hose Fire department, Diaz ambulance, the New York State Police and the Ulster County Sheriffs department.
