Pittsfield Police looking for clues after vehicle found stripped and abandoned
PITTSFIELD, NY (WRGB) A car found chopped and dropped!
Pittsfield Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have seen who abandoned a vehicle after its top, sides and back were taken.
Pictures from Pittsfield police show what's left of a Nissan they found on Turner Avenue early Wednesday morning.
CBS6 wanted to know how or why someone might take what they did, so we took the pictures to Oliver Auto Body in Pittsfield.
Here, co-owner Charles Wetherell takes a look.
"They're getting at airbags, they are also getting at the doors," said Wetherell.
He says airbags are very expensive, that they have gold contacts inside so that they don't rust or deteriorate.
He said they probably cut the top off to get at them; he shows us on a similar car outside.
He says the doors are relatively easy to remove.
Even though there aren't air bags in the back doors, he says they're worth about $300 and only take two minutes to get off.
Same with the trunk.
That's why he says they probably left the wheels.
"They have to have heavy equipment like jacks to raise the car up. So it wouldn't make any sense to wait around and jack up a car up and take the wheels off," said Wetherell.
Same for headlights, he says they would have had to remove the bumper.
He said the work could have easily been done with portable tools.
