Post Office employee accused of stealing gift cards, cash from mail
COBLESKILL, NY (WRGB) An employee of the US postal service is facing charges, accused of stealing mail.
Cobleskill Police say they arrested 21 year old Joel VanSteele after a joint investigation with the US Postal Service Office of the Inspector General.
Investigators say VanSteele was stealing gift cards, cash and other item from mail over a 2 month period while working on his mail delivery route.
VanSteele was charged with 2 counts of Petit Larceny, 1 count of Scheme to Defraud 2nd Degree, 3 counts of Forgery in the 2nd Degree, 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, 2 counts of Grand Larceny 4th Degree, and 2 counts of Money Laundering.
VanSteele was arraigned in the Town of Cobleskill Court and remanded to jail on $25,000 cash bail.
Police say the investigation is on-going and additional charges are expected.
