Schenectady Police: Driver who fled traffic stop became dizzy, died following foot pursuit
SCHENECTADY -- Schenectady Police say a driver they pursued on foot after he fled a traffic stop has died.
Police said that at about 4:34 p.m. Thursday, an officer observed a vehicle and traffic law violation and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver pulled into a driveway on Ward Avenue and ran into the back yard. He then led police on a brief foot pursuit before being taken into custody behind a residence on Donald Avenue.
According to police, while the male was alone in the back seat of a police car being transported to the Schenectady Police Department, he complained of breathing problems and dizziness. When the police car arrived at the department, the male was unresponsive and paramedics from Schenectady Fire Department were immediately called to treat him.
The male was treated and transported to Ellis Hospital via Mohawk Ambulance, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
At the request of the Schenectady Police Department, the New York State Police are investigating the incident.
