State Police: Man accused of extortion, mother accused of hiding him from police
ST JOHNSVILLE, NY (WRGB) State Police in Fonda have arrested a St Jonesville man, accused of extorting money from a man accused of sexually abusing a minor.
Police say that 25 year old Ryan Cook extorted over $2,000 from another suspect. According to investigators, Cook threatened to tell police about the suspect's involvement with a 14 year old.
State Police say the investigation into the extortion began after the alleged suspect was arrested for sexual abuse.
Police had been attempting to locate Cook since September 2017. He was located in the village after being dropped off by his mother, 48 year old Kimberly Cook, according to police.
State police also arrested her, charging her with hindering prosecution. Police say while investigating the whereabouts of her son, she told investigators that she would contact police when he was at her home.
Investigators say she concealed his whereabouts and provided him transportation.
Kimberly Cook was arraigned in the Town of St Johnsville Court and committed to the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $5000 cash bail. Ryan was arraigned in the St Johnsville Court and committed to the Montgomery County Jail.
