Troy PD investigating smash-and-grab for cigarettes
TROY, NY (WRGB)---"My first thought is, is it connected?"
Bill Crandall and his wife Melissa have owned a small grocery store on Washington St. for five years, and Tuesday night around 11:15, they say it was broken into for the second time in just three weeks.
"Camera footage caught the guy throwing a rock through the window, breaking the window," said Bill Crandall.
Crandall says the intruder shown here took lottery tickets and close to $700 worth of cigarettes.
"We work hard for our money and our business and it's tough when you get hit," he said.
"Immediately I heard the glass, and I jumped up and I said that's the store," said Yvonne Prunty.
Prunty and her fiancée James Terry live across the street - Terry says he ran outside - and after the suspect.
"He dove out of the window, and he took off running that way but," he said.
Terry says he didn't have shoes on, and only made it about a block. But he immediately called the Crandall's.
"Of course it's definitely frightening to come to work the next day."
Bill and Melissa Crandall say they're close with Terry and Prunty, and grateful for their neighbors and all their help.
"If it's not the store it could be us, if it's not us, it could be our kids. It could be our neighbors. So yeah, it's scary.."
Police are investigating both break-ins and everyone on the street is hoping for answers - but they all tell us they're thankful no one was inside at the time.
"We can't replace a person's life, we can replace a product."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Troy Police Department.
