Tuesday is National Walk to School Day

ALBANY (WRGB) - Tuesday October 4, 2017 is National Walk to School Day.

The day helps promote a healthy lifestyle for students. Students are encouraged to find a safe route to school, and walk or bike.

The Albany Police Department will be partnering with the City School District of Albany, New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, New York State Department of Health, AAA Hudson Valley, FedEx and Albany County DPW Traffic Safety for National Walk to School Day.

Students at Pine Hill Elementary School in Albany will get a special greeting at school from Albany Police and AAA’s “Otto the Auto”. They'll also attend a traffic safety assembly during the school day.

AAA has some safety reminders for parents and children:

-Walk facing traffic

-Bike with the flow of traffic

-Stay on the sidewalk, or far over on the shoulder -Use crosswalks, and don't cross in between parked cars.
