Definitions
 
Frost Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when scattered frost is expected during the growing season. Frost advisories are issued when low temperatures of 32°F to 36°F are forecast.
 
Freeze Warning
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties when temperatures of 32°F or below are expected over a wide area for a significant period of time (several hours) during the growing season. A widespread killing frost generally occurs under these conditions.
 
Wind Chill Advisory (Northeast Region Definition)
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when potentially dangerous wind chill readings are expected. For the local region a wind chill advisory is issued for Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Litchfield and Ulster counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 15°F to 25°F below zero. A wind chill advisory is issued for Albany, Bennington, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, Schenectady, Washington, and Warren counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 20°F to 29°F below zero.
 
Wind Chill Warning (Northeast Region Definition)
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices when life threatening wind chill conditions are expected. For the local region a wind chill warning is issued for Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Litchfield and Ulster counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 25°F below zero or lower. A wind chill warning is issued for Albany, Bennington, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schoharie, Schenectady, Washington, and Warren counties when the wind chill is expected to range from 30° below zero or lower.
 
Heat Advisory (Northeast Region Definition)
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties or parts of counties when locally the heat index (a combination of humidity and temperature) is expected to range between 100°F to 104°F for two or more hours. (Heat advisory criteria varies across the country)
 
Excessive Heat Warning (Northeast Region Definition)
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties or parts of counties when a heat index (a combination of humidity and temperatures) of at least 105°F is expected for more than 3 hours per day for two consecutive days, or a heat index of more than 115°F for any period of time. (Excessive heat warning criteria varies across the country)
 
Dense Fog Advisory
Issued by local National Weather Service Forecast offices for individual counties for the occurrence of widespread fog which reduces visibility to 1/8 mile or less.
