Beyond the Games: Phonsey Lambert
Only three high school baseball coaches in Section II history have won more than 500 games in their career.
Craig Phillips is way out in front, n fact, the long time Fort Plain coach went over 700 career wins two years ago, while Queensbury coach Jay Marra reached the 600 win plateau last season.
And as for the newest member of the 500 win club, that would be Saratoga Catholic coach Phonsey Lambert.
In his 29th season in charge, Lambert collected win number 500 a little more than a week ago.
And to go with all of those wins, a dozen league championships and five section titles.
It all adds up to a Hall of Fame career, Lambert did, in fact, go into the State Baseball Hall of Fame three years ago.
Lambert's best season to date included Saratoga's Tim Stauffer, the big leaguer, who spent a decade with the Padres, led Spa Catholic all the way to the state finals.
And as Lambert told our Kelly O'Donnell, perhaps this year's team has the potential to be that good.
