Troy, NY - This past off-season, Catholic Central High School graduate Joe Mahoney didn't like any of the offers he was receiving, and so he retired from professional baseball.
Mahoney and his wife Melissa have a newborn child, and being home with family in the Collar City weighed heavily in his decision to hang up his glove and bat.
"It wasn't an overnight thing," said the former South Troy Dodger Tuesday afternoon at Geer Field. "(I was) getting tired of the process", he added when discussing life as a professional ballplayer.
The now 27-year-old former first baseman appeared in 11 career Major League games over the past two seasons. Mahoney made his MLB debut in 2012 for the Baltimore Orioles, and then played part of last season with the Miami Marlins.
The former South Troy Dodger belted his one and only MLB home run April 26, 2013 at Marlins Park in Miami off of Chicago Cubs righthander Scott Feldman.
Mahoney plans to finish his college degree at UAlbany. He left the University of Richmond following his junior year when Baltimore selected him in the 6th round of the 2007 MLB Draft.
