Bill makes killing K9 cop a felony
ALBANY -- The state senate has passed a bill that makes it a felony for anyone who kills a K9 police officer.
'Ape's Law' passed unanimously 56-0 Monday morning.
This new legislation comes in the wake of the shootings in Herkimer and Mohawk where FBI K9 Officer Ape was shot and killed by gunman Kurt Myers.
Ape and his fellow officers were storming the abandoned building Myers was hiding inside when he opened fire, killing Ape.
Myers had gone on a shooting rampage earlier that day, taking the lives of four people.
Ape was the only officer killed in the shootout with Myers.
The bill has been sent to the assembly.
