Library looking to connect with 'Create Your Skate' program

ALTAMONT -- A local library is taking a new approach in how it connects with middle and high school-aged youth in the community.
The Altamont Free Library has started a new program called "Create Your Skate."  Kids work with graphic artists to design their own skateboards.  Engineers then help them to put the new board together.
The kids will ride the skateboards through town this summer to pick up donations for the local food pantry.
"The kids are going to be building, with their own hands, they're going to be building the skateboards.  They're going to be decorating, which requires you to be able to read instructions and so it's not just handing a kid a skateboard, saying, 'thank you -  now come do some community service," said Albany County District Attorney David Soares, who is funding the program.
