NY preservationists name 27 sites for historic nod
ALBANY -- An upstate church where the American Red Cross got its start and a downstate complex that was central to the nation's textile industry are among the more than two dozen entities recommended for addition to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The New York State Board for Historic Preservation says it has recommended 27 properties, resources and districts for the special designations that can lead to state preservation grants and federal tax credits.
The recommended sites include a 19th century church in Dansville, south of Rochester, that's linked to Clara Barton and the creation of the American Red Cross.
Another recommended site is in Rockland County, where a company operated what was the largest textile producer in the United States by the end of the 19th century.
