Mother, girl hit by car out of surgery

The four-year-old girl hit by an SUV Wednesday morning on Route 7 in Troy came out of surgery Thursday evening after doctors had worked on her for hours. According to Troy City Council member Rodney Wiltshire, Jr. and a friend of the girl's mother, the crash somehow disconnected the child's spinal cord from her brain to some degree. Wiltshire and the friend said the girl's mother, 19-year-old Sarah Bingham, of Troy, has a crushed pelvis. Wiltshire said Bingham is expected to be in the hospital for a month.

Wiltshire offered an update on the woman's and child's condition during a Planning Committee meeting Thursday night at the Oakwood Community Center, just on the other other side of the intersection where they were struck Wednesday morning around 7:20. The committee passed a resolution requesting the mayor appoint a task force to study ways of making transportation safer city-wide for traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians. One potential solution at the intersection of Hoosick Street and 10th Street is a foot bridge.

No charges have been filed against the driver who hit Bingham and her daughter. Police are still investigating. According to police, there are witnesses who say the driver had the green light at the time.
