Police: Bad relationship leads to arson arrests

WRGB Staff

GRANVILLE -- Two Porter Corners, Granville men have been charged with arson and reckless endangerment.

Crews were called to an apartment building at 44 Mettowee Street after residents were woken up by smoke detectors around 2 Monday morning.

An off duty Granville Police officer and a Washington County Sheriff Deputy located a fire burning at the base of the rear stairwell to the upstairs apartments.

They woke residents up downstairs. Residents upstairs evacuated to a balcony on the front of the building where they were rescued by fire crews.

Now, Stephen Gyarmathy and Joseph Guerrier are locked up.

Police say Gyarmathy has a child with a resident of the upstairs apartment, and say he was upset with the woman when she denied him visitation.

Investigators say he and Guerrier drove to the building and poured gasoline at the base of the stairs before setting the fire.

That staircase is the only exit for the upstairs apartments.

During the investigation, the two men confessed to their invovement in the crime.

They were arraigned and sent to Washington County Jail without bail.
