Woman gets prison for deadly DWI wreck

TROY (AP) -- An upstate New York woman has been sentenced to from 1 2/3 to 5 years in prison for a drunken-driving wreck that killed her companion.

Local media outlets report that 51-year-old Lisa Hartigan of Castleton-on-Hudson was sentenced in Rensselaer County Court. She pleaded guilty last month to second-degree manslaughter.

Authorities said Hartigan and 47-year-old Darlene Walter of Scotia had been drinking heavily before Hartigan drove off a road and crashed into a tree at about 5 a.m. on April 23, 2012. The accident happened in Schodack, 10 miles southeast of Albany.

Walter and Hartigan were the only ones in the pickup truck.

Hartigan apologized as friends and relatives of both women wept in the courtroom Friday. Walter was Hartigan's former sister-in-law and described as her best friend.
