RETRO6: Local tie to Amsterdam Queen stepping down from throne
1 million people have filled the streets of Amsterdam in the Netherlands on Tuesday for the abdication of Queen Beatrix.
After a 33-year reign, Queen Beatrix is stepping aside and her son, Williem-Alexander, will be appointed the new Dutch king.
There is a local tie to the story. The Queen visited Albany back in 1959. As the story goes, Governor Nelson Rockefeller was so upset and embarrassed with the Queen's impression of Albany, especially with the neighborhood adjoining the Governor's Mansion, that he was inspired to build the Empire State Plaza.
