Cuomo calls NY's 3rd on-time budget a 'hat trick'
BUFFALO (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo held up a hockey puck during a ceremonial budget signing in Buffalo and said it represented a "hat trick" -- three consecutive on-time state budgets.
Cuomo borrowed the hockey term for a player's scoring of three goals in a game during the first of two presentations planned in western New York Tuesday. A visit to Rochester was to follow.
The $135 billion budget passed last week. The state hadn't had three on-time budgets in a row for 30 years.
Meeting with reporters at the University at Buffalo, Cuomo said he was troubled by an unfolding corruption investigation involving downstate Sen. Malcolm Smith and several other politicians. Smith denies the allegations he tried to bribe his way into the New York City mayoral race.
