Online purchases could cost consumers more

ALBANY -- Shopping online is about to get more expensive if Congress passes a bill mandating sales tax be collected on all purchases.

Right now online retailers don't have to worry about collecting sales tax if they do not have a physical presence in a state. If they do then sales tax must be collected at that given state's rate.

On Friday the US Senate passed a bill that would change that and require consumers pay to online sales tax to the state where they live. The bill is Washington estimates that would generate $11 billion. Congress is likely to take up the measure when they return from break May 6th.
