Move to boost cider sales in New York

GRANVILLE  - -  Senator Charles Schumer is unveiling a new plan to boost apple cider sales across New York State.

The senator is holding an event Tuesday at the Slyboro Cider House in Granville to introduce the CIDER Act.  That stands for, Cider, Investment & Development through Excise Tax Reduction Act.

The goal is to reform the definition for hard apple and pear cider in the Internal Revenue Code.  That would increase their allowed alcohol by volume from 7 percent to 8.5 percent.  That move would allow them to be labeled and taxed like hard cider, rather than wine.  That is significant because under the current tax, it costs both producers and consumers more.

There are over 20 hard apple cider producers and over 650 apple growers in the state.
