Man accused of beating dog with shovel

SCHENECTADY -- The son of a Schenectady woman accused of beating her 8-year-old grandson to death is facing aggravated animal cruelty charges for allegedly beating his dog with a shovel.

According to the Schenectady County District Attorney's Office, 20-year-old DC Dunkel of Schenectady was caught on video tape beating his pit bull with a shovel. Officials say it happened on several occasions.

The dog is currently in SPCA foster care and is being held as evidence. The extent of the dogs injuries is unknown.

Dunkel is the son of Gloria Nelligan, the Schenectady woman who was arrested back in March on manslaughter charges after torturing her grandson, Sha'hiim Nelligan, and beating him for hours, according to Schenectady Police investigators.

Nelligan pleaded not guilty to all charges.
