Sheehan wins Albany County Democratic endorsement
ALBANY -- City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan won the endorsement of the Albany County Democratic Committee Wednesday night after current mayor Jerry Jennings announced he would not seek re-election.
Jennings was the early favorite after interviewing with the review panel over the weekend, however after nearly 20 years in office he announced he ultimately decided not to run.
During the selection process, several ward leaders and backers of candidate Corey Ellis attempted to have the party withhold an endorsement until additional interviews could be conducted. Others tried to have the party not endorse a candidate.
At one point Ellis, also the 11th Ward leader, attempted to have the motion tabled, but was overruled by the chair.
“This is what I was talking about when I say when I’m the next mayor of this city we're going to end this political bickering and fighting. It didn't have to go this way,” said Ellis after the meeting.
Sheehan placed second in the review panel and was ultimately received the party’s endorsement. After the meeting she laughed off the contentious meeting and said she looks forward to the campaign.
“This is the Democratic party, right?,” said Sheehan. “All voices can be heard and this is one of the things I love about being a Democrat is that it's a democratic process.”
