Vito Lopez won't wait, will resign Monday

Embattled Assemblyman Vito Lopez will resign effective Monday May 20th instead of waiting until the end of the legislative session.

Lopez on Friday released a statement saying he would resign June 20th, the last day of the legislative session. Now Speaker Sheldon Silver's office has confirmed Lopez will resign effective Monday.

The Brooklyn Assemblyman has been accused of sexually harassing four of his former female staffers. Earlier this week the state's ethics commission released a scathing report that claimed Lopez harassed the women over the course of four years.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver approved the payment of state money to two of the accusers in exchange of them keeping the matter out of court. Silver himself has come under fire for the way he handled the case.

Despite an initial plan to resign in June, Speaker Silver was set to lead the way to have Lopez expelled from office as soon as the Assembly came back to Albany, Monday.

Lopez is actively seeking a seat on the New York City Council.
