2013 Volunteer of the year
LOUDONVILLE -- The Food Pantries for The Capital District will announced the recipient of the 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award at its 19th Annual Community Auction and Bake Sale on Saturday.
"Volunteers are the backbone of our organization as our pantries rely on volunteers and we are thrilled to honor our Volunteer of the Year who will be announced at the event. On average, 20 volunteers assist each pantry on a regular basis, which means there are more than 1,000 volunteers in total," said Natasha Pernicka, Executive Director of The Food Pantries. "The Community Auction is not only a wonderful event for us to come together as a coalition to raise support for our programs, but also to celebrate the work that we do while acknowledging that there is so much more to be done to alleviate hunger in our community."
Last year, the Community Auction raised more than $7,000 and helped provide food and support to 53 member pantries who serve the community. In 2012 The Food Pantries delivered nearly 2 million pounds of food to local food pantries, which comprises more than 2.5 million meals.
"Without the support of The Food Pantries for The Capital District, we could not feed the hungry in our neighborhoods. In addition to helping us with funding and volunteers, The Food Pantries helps us by delivering food and educational opportunities." said Lorraine Houk, Director of FOCUS Interfaith Food Pantry in Albany and kitchen supervisor at the Auction. "The Community Auction is a fun event that brings the community together for a great cause that helps so many people right here in the Capital Region."
