Ending Martin Luther King Day off at Vt. school being considered

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -- The St. Johnsbury School Board is considering making students in the Vermont town attend school on the Martin Luther King Day holiday in January.

School Director Tony Greenwood says the school doesn't get days off for presidents such as Abraham Lincoln.

Greenwood says he has "no beef with Martin Luther King." The district needs to ensure snow days can be made up and the school doesn't need another day off.

School Director Richard Boisseau says he supports school attendance on King Day, saying the day should be used to raise children's awareness of King and his efforts to bring about racial equality.

The Caledonian Record reports the issue came up at a board meeting where next year's school calendar was unveiled. It gives students the King holiday off.
