Fate of fired Round Lake librarian undecided

ROUND LAKE -- The library board of trustees did not vote on motions to reinstate a terminated librarian and ask for the resignation of the library director. Instead the board will wait for an investigation to be completed later this week.

Theresa Marchione was fired earlier this month after she closed the library 40 minutes early on May 29 following a tornado warning, but failed to get permission and was terminated.

“It wasn't because she closed the library early. That wasn't the reason for it,” said library director Carol Sheffer, who declined to elaborate.

The library receives taxpayer funding, but is privately owned by the Women’s Round Lake Improvement Society, which passed motions to reinstate Marchione and ask library director Carol Shaffer to resign during an emergency meeting Monday.  The society is expected to meet June 20 to discuss the investigation, but a second emergency meeting could be called before then to discuss the situation.

Marchione did not attend the meeting and has declined to speak publically about the incident.

“She's very hurt. She's very hurt by the matter,” said Marchione’s son. “She's very appreciative of all the community support. A lot of things came up. A lot of pride of being a Round Laker, but she's overwhelmed with the support.”
