Gloversville woman filed fake tax returns, collected $30K, says NYS Tax Dept.
GLOVERSVILLE -- A 38-year-old Gloversville woman is facing a slew of felony charges for collecting over $30,000 from the government by filing fake income tax returns, according to the NYS Tax Department.
Crystal Sweet of Nine Mile Tree Road is facing 20 felony income tax fraud related charges: grand larceny, seven counts of identity theft, attempted grand larceny and eleven counts of offering a false instrument for filing.
Investigators say Sweet filed several false personal income tax returns in the names and social security numbers of Gloversville residents without their knowledge.
The NYS Tax Department says she reported fake employment and earned income on those returns, and then claimed numerous credits to maximize personal income tax refunds. In total, the NYS Tax Department says Sweet claimed about $30,000 in unjustified refunds for her personal use.
Sweet is being held at Fulton County Jail on $25,000 cash bail, $50,000 bond.
